Graduation is in the Air!
Hey guys!
Very long time, no talk! Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to blogging, but I promise I am back! Graduating college is a stressful and long process that eats up a lot of time especially if you are in art school.
This semester, I was lucky enough to have only one studio class that was my portfolio class. My other classes were general education classes which was nice but also was a hassle. Having one studio allowed me to focus solely on creating great pieces for my portfolio which was awesome and had me create some wicked pieces in the process. The downside of one studio is that the remainder of my classes, being general education classes, gave me a lot of work that I did not have a lot of focus for. There I was trying to finish a 5-7 page paper when I had paintings to finish or artwork to frame or even pumpkins to make! It was also frustrating taking a required math class trying to figure out the degrees of the arc of a circle... yeah, I had other, less frustrating things to do.
When you graduate art school, you just don't do your exit loan counseling and walk across the stage. You curate your very own show in a college-wide exhibition! At the beginning of the semester, I made a huge gulp when I heard about the exhibition; As the semester went on, I started to get more and more exited! I get to curate my own show, however I want! So naturally, I wanted to make my own haunted house!
Let me start off by saying, this has been one of the most fun, expensive and inspiring projects I have ever encountered in my art career. The possibilities are endless if you put enough effort into it. I knew I wanted the walls to be different than everybody else, make it stand out. In the past, I have starched fabric to my kitchen walls in an apartment to have a damage free change; this army-wives trick is one of my favorites! This trick allowed me to change the walls without much damage or clean-up.
The frames were also an important part of my show. I understand when some like their work to be in the same frame throughout the entire show, however, in a haunted house, that is not always the case. All of my frames I got from the Salvation Army. Not only did this save me money but it also gave a vintage and unique look to my show. They also allowed me to get hands on and creative with my approach to framing my artwork, as many frames were glued shut.
Although I never intended to focus on lighting, somehow that became a very important part of my show and would not be complete with out it! Using string lights, candles and even porch lights to light my show have been some of the greatest details of my show.
