Spring Break: A Time for Vacationing in Commission Land!
Spring break is a time for student relaxation, and grand vacations creating lasting memories!
Right...?
Not if you are an art student.
Last week was Kendall College of Art and Design (of FSU) spring break. Being an art student, spring break is spent catching up on art, freaking out about your upcoming senior show, marketing yourself, and finishing commissions. My first accomplishment over spring break was the completion of two custom hockey helmets!
I know this person who has two wonderful little children that are starting their journey in hockey this year and wanted their helmets to be extra special. She approached me and asked if I would be interested in painting them for her. "Of course!", I said! I love getting commissions like these because they are a nice break from the usual and they give me an excellent opportunity to make people happy and get people excited about art.
The first helmet had three requirements; pink, purple and butterflies. Well... this will be a very good break from the monsters I have been painting. Not something I usually illustrate but it was a very nice, happy break! (I even found myself having to listen to more "pop" music to get into a "happier" mood). The second helmet was a little more challenging because it was black rather than a white blank surface. For that reason, it was a little more minimal and had a Michigan State University theme to it.
The process was a very long one that required dis-assembling, sanding, sketching, drawing, taping, spraying and re-assembling. But it was a change in routine and I very much enjoyed the more "hand-on" process.
Here is the video of the entire process fro sanding to clear coating!
